Tricolor Detox Smoothie with The Home Label

When April began, Spring made a serious entrance with it. Of course, in my part of the world, infamous for the summer heat that also coincides with the arrival of mangoes, the temperatures were cranked to summer like no time went by. With all this change happening outside, I began to crave an internal change too. Spring seemed like a good time to begin as any. So I made the switch – I traded in coconut cake for Quinoa cake, cookies for granola, tricolor pasta for tricolor smoothies. It’s work in progress, of course. Since we are speaking of work in progress, I hope everyone was able to cast a vote in the recent elections. There’s just something about the country on the cusp of change that has you creating detox plans like no other. It was time to out the corrupt and in with the good stuff. This tricolor smoothie is greatly influenced by Spring and Politics – a combination like no other. All these recipes make great drinks on their own, of course. But I like to mix it all up in my 16 oz. coffee mug in the spirit of detox and think about cheeseburgers. I’d also like to impart some basic smoothie knowledge – all you need is something green, something crunchy and something creamy. Green isn’t necessarily restricted to spinach or swiss chard but you can always sub for fruits and other leafy vegetables.

I think my craving for change was so strong that the universe responded with a gift – The Home Label, my favorite spot for finding the prettiest kitchenware and home decor items, sent me beautiful sundae glasses along with some printed napkins on cue, to complete my springtime smoothie obsession. I think they must have figured out where all that late night blog traffic was coming from. But in my defense, I find it impossible to resist their one-of-a-kind, hand picked items. My birthday is coming up (November is totally around the corner) and Universe, I’ve been vying this adorable cake server and vanilla-hazelnut candle. Check out their latest collection here.

For the ultimate summer green smoothie, add 1/4 cup yogurt (I used homemade Coconut greek yogurt), a handful of mint leaves, a handful of basil leaves and a tablespoon of flaxseeds into the bowl of a blender. Blend for desired consistency, thinning it with skim milk, if necessary. Pour into a glass and set aside for tricolor smoothie. If not, serve!

Banana and Oats Smoothie (Layer 2)

For the best ever breakfast smoothie, add 1 banana, cut into large chunks, a handful of instant oats and 1/4 cup of yogurt (I used homemade Coconut greek yogurt) into the bowl of a blender. Blend for desired consistency, thinning it with skim milk, if necessary. Pour into a glass and set aside for tricolor smoothie. If not, serve!

Mango & Chia Seeds Smoothie (Layer 3)

For the coolest smoothie in town, add 1 ripe mango (pitted and cut into chunks), a tablespoon of chia seeds (they need to have bloomed – add a tablespoon of chia seeds and immerse in a bowl of water for a few minutes) and 1/4 cup yogurt (I used homemade Coconut greek yogurt) in the bowl of a blender. Blend for desired consistency, thinning it with skim milk, if necessary. Pour into a glass and set aside for tricolor smoothie. If not, serve!

Final

Finally, to assemble the smoothie, pour each portion into a tall glass (ideally the cutest vintage sundae glass you can find), starting with the green, white and finishing with yellow. Serve cold!
